Airtag is a small device from Apple that can help keep track of your belongings.

But sometimes it keeps making sounds for a variety of reasons, such as setting up notifications or alerts about missing items.

Why Is My Airtag Beeping

If your Airtag keeps beeping, you can try to troubleshoot the following common causes.

You've Just Set up Your Airtag

When you set up your AirTag for the first time, it will make a sound to confirm that it has been successfully activated and a connection has been established with your device. This sound is usually a single, clear beep indicating that the device is ready to use.

AirTag Low Battery

AirTags are equipped with batteries that last for over a year under normal use. However, when the battery begins to run low, your AirTag will beep to alert you that the battery needs to be replaced. This beeping is usually periodic.

Your Airtag Has Lost Bluetooth Connection

AirTags rely on Bluetooth to communicate with your Apple device. If your AirTag goes out of Bluetooth range (usually about 30 feet from your device), after a period of time and after being moved it may beep to warn you that it can't connect.

The Airtag Is Signaling a Lost Item

When your item is lost, you can use the Find My app to mark the AirTag it's connected to as "lost”. When you do this, your AirTag will automatically start making a sound if someone else's device (via their Apple device and the Find My network) detects the AirTag you've marked as lost. This is usually a continuous sound to alert those around you and help them notice the item marked as lost, increasing the likelihood that it will be recovered.

The Airtag Could Be Tracking You

To prevent an AirTag from being used for inappropriate tracking (for example, when someone puts an AirTag in your belongings to monitor your movements without your consent), Apple has designed a privacy feature.

If an AirTag is separated from its owner for more than a certain amount of time (usually three days) and continues to follow another person, it will begin to emit an intermittent sound. The purpose of this sound is to alert the person that they may be being followed by a detached AirTag.

How to Stop Your Airtag from Beeping

After knowing the possible causes of Airtag beeps, here are some things you can do to fix it.

Replacing the AirTag Battery

Replacing the AirTag Battery

Replacing the AirTag's battery is certainly one of the most effective ways to address its beeping, especially if the beeping is caused by a low battery.

The AirTag is designed to run on CR2032 batteries, which typically last over a year under normal use.

Below are the steps to replace the AirTag battery:

  1. Turn the AirTag over with the white side facing up.
  2. Using two fingers, press down on the stainless steel battery cover and rotate it to the left (counterclockwise). The cover will loosen and can be easily removed.
  3. Remove the old battery and insert the new CR2032 battery. Make sure the front side of the battery (the side with the "+" symbol) is facing you.
  4. When you hear a click, the battery is installed correctly.
  5. Place the battery cover back on the AirTag to ensure proper alignment.
  6. Press and hold and rotate to the right (clockwise) until the cover locks.

Keep Your Airtag Close to Your iPhone

Ensuring that the AirTag stays close to your iPhone allows for a stable connection and also helps prevent the AirTag from making warning sounds, such as lost connection alerts.

Keep Your Airtag Close to Your iPhone

Check the distance between AirTag and iPhone regularly. Use an accessory designed for AirTag, such as a keychain or pendant, to attach AirTag to items you carry frequently, such as keys, a backpack, or a handbag. This reduces the distance between your AirTag and your iPhone, especially when you're on the go.

Set reminders for your AirTag in the Find My app. For example, if your AirTag is separated from your iPhone by more than a certain distance, the app can push a notification to alert you.

Enable Bluetooth

When you have Bluetooth enabled and your AirTag is in the vicinity of your device, iPhone should automatically recognize the AirTag and attempt to connect to it. If for some reason the AirTag doesn't connect automatically, you can trigger the connection process manually. Here are additional steps on how to do this:

  1. Make sure your AirTag is within Bluetooth range of your iPhone (typically within about 30 feet/10 meters).
  2. If the AirTag is still not connected, turn off your iPhone's Bluetooth feature, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
  3. Turn on your iPhone, unlock the screen, and the AirTag should appear under the Items tab in the Find Me app.

Disable Lost Mode

If your AirTag is making sounds in Lost Mode, you can follow these steps to disable Lost Mode:

  1. On your iPhone, locate and open the Find Me app. This is the central location for managing all of your Apple-tracked devices.
  2. In the bottom navigation bar of the app, tap on the "Items" option. This lists all the AirTags and other trackable devices associated with your Apple ID.
  3. Find and select the AirTag from the list that you previously set to Lost Mode and tap it to go to the device details page.
  4. On the AirTag's details page, scroll down to find the "Mark as lost" section. Tapping on this option will open up more settings related to lost mode.
  5. Tap "Disable" or "Turn off lost mode" and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
  6. When you have finished, you may be asked to confirm. Confirm your selection to ensure that Lost Mode has been successfully disabled.

Tips:

Ensure that you have recovered the item safely or given up looking for it before disabling the lost mode. You disable Lost Mode, any notifications and alerts associated with the AirTag stop, including automatic sounds.

Re-Pair and Reset the Airtag

Re-pairing AirTag is an effective way to resolve connection issues or unexpected behavior. Below is a detailed step-by-step guide with intuitive steps to help you re-pair your AirTag:

Step 1: Remove AirTag from your Apple ID

  1. Open the Find Me app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Items tab at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select the AirTag you want to re-pair from the list of items.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Delete Item.
  5. Tap Delete to confirm the deletion. This will unlink the AirTag from your Apple ID and clear its history.

Re-Pair and Reset the Airtag

Step 2: Reset AirTag

  1. Remove the AirTag's stainless steel battery cover by pressing it down and turning it counterclockwise.
  2. Remove the battery, wait approximately 30 seconds, and place it back in the AirTag.
  3. Press the battery until you hear a beep. Repeat this step until you hear a total of five beeps - the fifth beep will be two beeps indicating that the AirTag has reset.
  4. Step 3: Re-pair the AirTag with your device
  5. Hold the reset AirTag close to your iPhone. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone.
  6. You should see a setup popup window on your iPhone screen, similar to when you first set up your AirTag.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to re-pair your AirTag. You will be asked to name your AirTag and register it to your Apple ID.

Update Your Airtag Firmware

AirTag firmware updates are pushed automatically when AirTag is in range of your iPhone. However, you can check and make sure it's updated:

  • Open the Find My app, go to the Items tab, and select your AirTag.
  • Click on the AirTag to view its details. The current firmware version will be listed below the battery level.
  • If there is an update available, it will automatically download and install it when the AirTag is in range of your iPhone. This process may take some time and there is no manual way to force an update.

By following these steps, you can ensure that the connection between AirTag and your iPhone is as smooth and automated as possible. If you still have problems after trying these steps, you may need to do further troubleshooting, such as checking to see if AirTag needs to be reset or contacting Apple's Technical Support for assistance. This will ensure that your device functions properly and minimize unwanted beeps due to connection issues.
